Excerpt from The Scent of Wisteria By Caitlin Conway
"You are very talented," he said, and it took her a second to realize he was
referring to the sketch she had done of him.
Her flush deepened, if that was possible. She wished now that she hadn't
added that silly laurel wreath around his regal brow. It was quite
embarrassing, to be caught acting imaginative and romantic with a total
stranger. "Thank you," she said very softly and reached to store the
sketchpad away in her tote bag.
But he took it gently from her and looked at the sketch again. And again
that wonderful smile lit up his face. "A very handsome man, si?"
Carrie's high-strung nerves almost had her laughing out loud at his comment.
"Si," she agreed shyly.
"When you look through the eyes of love," he continued, "your beloved is
always beautiful. You made me beautiful because you see me with eyes of
love."
Startled, she could think of no reply.
He put the sketchpad away in her tote bag. "I wish I were an artist. Then I
could show you just how beautiful you are. The whole world would see you as
I see you. Bellissima." He leaned close to her and she felt herself drawn
magnetically toward him. His gaze roved slowly over her face, and she could
almost feel the warmth spring up on her skin, as if he had actually touched
her. Then he spoke so low that it was almost a whisper. "At last I find
you..."
