Settled Mind

"Knowing others is wisdom,

knowing yourself is enlightenment."

Tao Tzu

We lead such hectic lives. The sound of the alarm clock in the morning may as well be a starter pistol... AND THEY’RE OFF!!! We are always so busy taking care of others, our jobs & our families… it is no wonder we become disconnected from ourselves…sometimes not knowing what we think, what we want or even what we need.

"Why must I meditate in order to achieve enlightenment?" demanded the prince of the teacher. "I can study. I can pray. I can think on issues clearly. Why this silly emptying of the mind?"

"I will show you," said the teacher, taking a bucket of water into the garden under the full moon. "Now I stir the surface & what do you see?"

"Ribbons of light," answered the prince.

"Now wait," said the teacher setting the bucket down. Both teacher and boy watched the calming surface of the water in the bamboo bucket for many minutes.

"Now what do you see?" asked the teacher.

"The moon," replied the prince.

"So too, young master, the only way to grasp enlightenment is through a calm and settled mind."

If we were to spend as little as ten to fifteen minutes per day in meditation we could go from a frazzled state of mind (stirred surface - ribbons of light - scattered mind) to a calmer, happier state of mind (calm surface - clear moon - settled mind) and become reacquainted with ourselves...enlightened. All we need is a quiet room and a willingness to "just be" in the moment and B-R-E-A-T-H-E.

Til next time…
